Music Board

As part of the SPBA's commitment to improving pipe bands, pipe band musicians, and pipe band contests in Saskatchewan, the SPBA appointed a Music Board to work toward implementing recommendations with respect to music standards, judging credentials and grading of soloists and bands.

The SPBA's first Music Board was: Iain MacDonald [Chair], Kenna Whelan (Moose Jaw), Gordon Findlater (Saskatoon), Doug Pritchard (Regina).

The current Music Board Chair is: Kenna Whelan

SPBA Band Grading for 2008 Season

Each autumn, the SPBA Music Board Chair reviews the current grading for bands in the SPBA. A grade is recommended for each band based on previous performances in the season just past, as well as other factors, such as membership changes in bands. The goal is to grade SPBA bands on a level consistent with standards in other jurisdictions.

Bands wishing to apply for re-grading should contact the Music Board Chair.

Solo Grading for 2008

The SPBA will be reviewing soloist grading for all member pipers and drummers, with the goal of placing competitors in the most appropriate grade for their performance level. This year, we have requested that competitors provide a little more information with their grading card request.

SPBA Adjudicator List

The SPBA has been working on developing a list of potential adjudicators. This is a troublesome problem, in that very few SPBA members would actually qualify given the standards set by ANAPBA. However, we have been working with a list of known skilled individuals within Saskatchewan, and hope to follow this up with workshops and training for those on the list who would like to develop the skills needed to adjudicate piping and drumming contests within Saskatchewan.
