The SPBA is the umbrella organization for pipers, drummers, and pipe bands in the Province of Saskatchewan. The Association developed from the Prairie Pipe Band Association, and was formed in 1992.
NEWS
2010 Annual General Meeting
The SPBA 2010 Annual General Meeting will be held April 17 in Regina, with the opportunity for individuals, member bands, and associate members to call in via teleconference. The current SPBA Board has decided to continue the policy of encouraging full member band attendance by reducing the Community Band Grant by 50% for any band not represented at the meeting, either in person or via teleconference.
The current President has indicated that he will not be standing for re-election, and there will be a need for more Board members to replace retiring members. Be sure to attend! Details of location will be placed here, and also circulated to all member bands.
SOUND ADVICE 2010
SOUND ADVICE 2010 will be returning to the University of Regina campus July 11-16, 2010. This year's panel of instructors, includes Graham Brown, Kenna Whelan, Ryan MacDonald, Garth Neel, Doug Stronach and James P. Troy! We are also pleased to be adding 2009 Inverness Gold Medallist Glenn Brown to the line-up, and we have some other great instructions ready should we need them. Brochures are ready and are being mailed out shortly, and you can also DOWNLOAD one from here. There are a number of scholarships available this year again, so be sure to check the web site for details. Information and forms will be mailed to SPBA members about those.
SPBA Grade 5 Development Band
The SPBA Board recently decided to try launching a Grade 5 "development band," which would be made up of novice/Grade 5 band members from exisiting bands who either had no Grade 5 band, or who could not use those new members in their Grade 4 band. The idea is to give these junior players the opportunity to develop and compete as a band, and at the same time develop the skills to fully integrate into their own organization's Grade 4 band. More information to come, but if you would like to learn more in the meantime, send email.
SPBA VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
A couple of years ago the SPBA set up a system for members to nominate volunteers in various categories. In 2007, the late Gordon Findlater was nominated and voted unanimously into the "Hall of Fame" and the Board would like to have more nominations! Download the forms here.
New Archives Material!
ALSO ADDED: more great archive information on the Weyburn Legion Pipe Band, The Saskatoon Ladies Pipe Band [1930s], Victoria Park Pipe Band, and Individual pipers and drummers of interest. Last year, we added some more information about SK pipers and bands. There are a number of photos now on the summer school page, some additions to the Regina Boys Pipe Band page, and an all new page here. Be sure to send in any names, stories, photos, clippings or information that will help to fill this out!
SPBA CENTENNIAL ARCHIVES
In celebration of Saskatchewan's 100th Birthday, the SPBA has been working to compile a record of bands and piping in Saskatchewan. We have some great information and links already in place, and we need your help!
Please send us information, stories, photos, and let us know if you spot any inaccuracies! We hope to have a complete picture of Saskatchewan bands over time.
